The piece came out of two personal observations of using voice during the COVID lockdown: one is the increasing tendency to self-talk, as the result of the longing for external communication in physical proximity with others, as one normally would before the lockdown; the other is the self-awareness of talking, due to the fact that most remote meeting tools tend to strip visual cues such as facial expression and body language from the communication and focuses disproportionally on the use of voice, which heightens its performative character. In this project, I tried to capture the psychological conditions concerning these two aspects: loneliness, uncertainty, the fear of being unable to articulate, and the exhaustion from relying on the voice to communicate, to name a few.
All the material comes from a recording of voice improvisation in a tiny and dark kitchen pantry at the beginning of COVID-19 but before the lockdown. They were intended as the tape portion for a choral piece, which never took place. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see how much of the private and even negative emotions described above were already present in the material, the unearthing of which rendered the compositional process therapeutic and cathartic.
